Gelandesprung Newsletters & President's Message

The month of August was filled with summer Club activities, such as our Summer picnic, a Friday night Happy Hour and our 5th Annual Bike Ride and BBQ.  Pictures of the events can be found on our Facebook Page--check it out.  Our Fall Banquet will be on October 13th this year--be sure to save the date !!

Dick Wortiska passed away on July 23rd.  It was a sad day indeed.  His funeral was on July 27th and was a great tribute to him and his life.  He was an outstanding leader of our Club offering friendship and mentoring to all of our members.  He truly was the heart and soul of the Gelandesprung Ski Club.  He will be missed.

Since Mont Ripley was so well liked last year, the Board has decided to return again this year for 2 days of skiing.  We will be going during the weekend of February 23-25, 2018.  Our lodging will be in Houghton again, the home of Michigan Tech, a quaint college town with a night life.  If you are an extreme skier, for an additional $34, Mount Bohemia is offered as a side trip on Saturday.  With a 900 foot vertical drop and glades to ski in, it is definitely for the adventurous!

Dust off your passports because the Board has decided to go to Sun Peaks in the British Columbia Canada for our western trip.   There will be ski in-ski out accommodations, in fact you can even ski through town!  Tom Piette has offered to be trip leader and Ron Quick his assistant.  Look for more highlights in the trip announcement in this newsletter.

The sun was shining for the bike ride through Peninsula State Park.  The event was hosted by Frank Wickham, who did a wonderful job.  Our 2nd Happy Hour for the summer will be July 21st at St. Brendan’s Inn starting at 6pm.  Don’t forget that our Summer Picnic, held on August 5th, will be catered.  We are planning on having a pig roast with all the trimmings.

We won AGAIN at CMSC!!  Penny Holman took first place for our Newsletter and Sheri Gardapee took second for our Website!!  Kudos to both!  Tom Piette, our Secretary, led a group to the Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council (CMSC) Seminar on May 20th where the awards were presented.  The Education Forum in the morning consisted of:  “Using Internet Technology for Our Clubs”, a “Multi Club Trips Roundtable”, “Club Leadership” and “Trip Crisis Management”.   The afternoon was also informational since many Ski Resorts were available to tell us what they have to offer.

It was like a breath of fresh Spring air to see Dick Wortiska at the Spring Banquet! To show our appreciation for everything Dick does for our Club now and in the past, the Board gave him a plaque.  After the standing ovation for Dick subsided, Dr. Tom Nockerts, a ski patroller for Brule was a guest speaker.  He told us what it takes to be part of a ski patrol and asked if anyone was interested. If you were not at the banquet and would like to know more, please contact me at
